As an Expat you can perfectly survive in the Netherlands by using English. However, you can only truly feel at “Home”, once you start to speak and write in Dutch. Only then will you be able to understand the humor and who knows, even make a few jokes yourself. Besides, it will benefit you to become more familiar with the culture!
Language is connected to the land, a transmitter of social structure and the bearer of both common and business related cultural traits. Having command of the language creates a connection with the country and its citizens.
Mastery of the Dutch language is an advantage. Consider the outcome if you forget to use punctuation marks, spaces, and exclamation marks…make spelling mistakes or use words you don’t fully understand. This could be a hindrance to those who do posses the right language skills. A piece of text suddenly becomes more of a challenge to read. Another advantage is, that you will be taken more seriously if you are able to communicate in Dutch. In other words, you will feel at Home!
